About The Choir

A Community Choir based in Handsworth, Birmingham.

The choir was set up in 2013 and is now a voluntary group with its own committee. We are a friendly and vibrant choir and welcome adults of all ages. There are no auditions and you don’t need to have a fantastic voice or be able to read music as many of us sing by ear. We meet every week during term time from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Ian Jackson, the Choir Director, selects fun, popular music in a variety of styles – pop, folk, rock, jazz…..  If you’d like to give us a try, just turn up and start singing, even if you haven’t sung for years!

Our Musical Director, Iain Jackson

Iain Jackson took over the role of Musical Director for the Handsworth Community Choir in April 2023, having been their accompanist since 2015. In the weekdays Iain works as accompanist and ensemble singing tutor in the Acting department of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, a position he has held since 2017. He also teaches piano at King Edward VI Aston Boys School and is the accompanist for the Chandos Solihull Choir (from September 2023), taking over from Darren Hogg. Besides his skills as an accompanist and ensemble leader Iain enjoys arranging and composing songs, principally for the Handsworth Community Choir and also for the eclectic jazz quintet Grandma’s Biscuit Tin in which he plays piano and sings. In a varied freelance career Iain also plays regularly with The Nick Ross Orchestra (Glenn Miller style big band) and Kal’s Kats, a 1950s style jump jive outfit, besides deputising as accompanist for a number of other choirs on occasion, such as Phoenix Singers and Bournville Vocal-Ease Ladies Choir.
